In addition to the places listed here, you can camp or take advantage of some simple screened-in rooms at the beautiful Herrera Botanical Gardens and Tent Camp (tel. 735-5210). Rates run around $12 to $15 (£6-£7.50) per person to camp; it's $20 (£10) per person in a screened-in room, with access to a communal kitchen, bathroom, and shower facilities, and unlimited access to the trails and gardens. If you don't have your own tent, they can rent you one.
Where to Stay & Dine Around the Osa Peninsula
As with most of the lodges in Drake Bay, the accommodations listed in this section include three meals a day in their rates and do a large share of their bookings in package trips. Per-night rates are listed, but the price categories have been adjusted to take into account the fact that all meals are included. Ask about package rates if you plan to take several tours and stay a while: They could save you money.
In addition to the lodges listed here, there are several other options, ranging from small bed-and-breakfasts to fully equipped home rentals. Surfers, in particular, might want to inquire into one of the several rental houses located close to the beach at Matapalo. Your best bet for any of the above is to contact Isabel at Osa Tropical (tel. 735-5062).
Finally, there's been a small boom of lodges out in Carate. In addition to the tent lodge listed below you can look into La Leona Eco-Lodge (tel. 735-5705; www.laleonalodge.com), another tent camp option on the outskirts of the national park, and Lookout Inn (tel. 735-5431; www.lookout-inn.com), a more traditional lodge option right in Carate. Predominantly used for yoga retreats, Luna Lodge (tel. 888/409-8448 in the U.S., or 380-5036; www.lunalodge.com) has luxurious rooms and private cabins with great views over the jungle, and they even have some permanent, large tents for the more budget-conscious travelers.
