The Cliffs Preserve

The Cliffs Preserve is set in as magical a setting as you will find in Chile. Their massive 8,000-acre property, in a suburb about an hour from Puerto Montt, is covered in primary coastal rainforest, and a number of active excursions are arranged by top guides and naturalists. Horseback riding, hiking, boat trips to see penguins, sea lions, otters, and whales -- the world's largest blue whale nursery is not far off shore -- and even heliskiing are offered. The resort is also actively involved with the local community of Los Muermos; it funds an orphanage there and the hotel property includes a home for the families of fishermen.

The huge and well-designed 2- to 4-suite villas, each with their own wood-fired hot tub, are isolated from each other and overlook a breathtaking sheltered beach. You can rent an entire villa, just a suite, or a suite with the use of a common area that includes a kitchen and living room. The cuisine and wine on offer at the restaurant are as good as any resort in Chile; produce comes from an organic farm on the property. An additional 12 smaller and less-expensive villas are currently under construction.
