Puerto Varas has many good to excellent restaurants, but the service in this area tends to be slow, so have patience. In addition to the restaurants below, there is Pim's, San Francisco 712 (tel. 65/233998), a country-western-style pub with burgers, sandwiches, and such American-style appetizers as buffalo wings and salads. It is popular with locals, and the nighttime ambience is very lively. If you didn't get the chance to visit the landmark Café Hausmann in Validivia, you can try their famous crudos at their branch at San Francisco 644. Cutesy coffeehouses have also sprung up all over town, including the excellent El Barista Caffe (tel. 65/233130), at Martínez 211, and Café Pangaré (tel. 65/231012), at San Francisco 735.

Two good spots for a drink at night are the Barómetro, San Pedro 418 (tel. 65/236371), with a rough-hewn wood bar and tree-trunk tables, a cozy atmosphere, and snacks; and the Garage (no phone; located on San José next to the Copec gas station), a two-story place with wood tables and electronic music that is popular with 20- and 30-somethings. Urbano (tel. 65/233081), at San Pedro 516, is a trendier pub with grub and is occasionally home to DJs and acoustic music.
