Gran Hotel Colonos del Sur

Boasting a waterfront location next door to the casino and charming German colonial architecture, the Colonos del Sur is a standard favorite among travelers to Puerto Varas and one of the nicer hotels in town. However, the hotel recently acquired another hotel and renovated the premises, calling it the Express, and this hotel is where you'll find the best panoramic views, cheery interiors, and an outdoor pool. Really, these factors give the Express an edge (and the lower price helps, too), even if the rooms at the Gran Hotel are a bit more sophisticated and the Gran is more centrally located. At the Gran, the common areas are large and plentiful, and the interiors have an old-fashioned country decor. The tea salon here is one of the best in Puerto Varas, and it is a good place to sample Chile's famous onces (high tea). Doubles with a lake view are slightly larger, for the same price; others face the casino and are not much of a value for the price. The large suites have wraparound windows, sparkling bathrooms, and extra touches like crocheted bedspreads.
