Sueño Azul Resort Review

This nature lodge and wellness retreat offers arguably the top accommodations in the area. Set at the juncture of two rivers and backed by rainforest and forested mountains, the setting's pretty darn nice as well. All rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, two double beds, large bathrooms, and a private porch overlooking either one of the rivers or a small lake. Ten of the rooms come with air-conditioning, and one large junior suite has its own outdoor Jacuzzi. Meals are served in an open-air dining room set to take in the view, and a pool, Jacuzzi, bar, and rancho are down by the rivers' edge. The best place to cool off is in the massive outdoor pool, fed and filled by river water from a small waterfall, although there's a more traditional freshwater pool, and you can simply swim in the river at various spots. There's also a good-size spa and yoga facility. A wide range of tours and activities is offered, including rainforest hikes, horseback riding, mountain biking, and fly-fishing, as well as trips to the area's major attractions. The newest attraction here is a trapeze rig, with daily lessons in this high-flying circus art.

Facilities:
Restaurant; small pool; activities desk; room service (7am-10pm); laundry service

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
