Planning a Trip

Visitor Information

The Tourist Information Office is off Forum Square at Forum 2 (tel. 052/219-197; fax 052/211-855; www.pulainfo.hr), opposite the Temple of Augustus. It provides maps, brochures, and lists of events in Pula and around Istria. The center is open from 9am to 8pm Monday through Saturday and from 10am to 6pm Sunday and holidays.

Private agencies like Activatravel Istra at Scalierova 1 (tel. 052/215-497; fax 052/211-889; info@activa-istra.com) book special-interest tours, including a truffle-hunting excursion and dinner in Livade (in season). Several of the Pula area's hotels, as well as private accommodations, are operated by Arena Turist; its offices are in the Riviera Hotel at Splitska 1 (tel. 052/529-400; www.arenaturist.hr). It is a short walk from the amphitheater and open from 7am to 8pm Monday through Saturday, 8am to 1pm Sunday. Atlas Travel at Starih Statuta 1 (tel. 052/393-040; www.atlas-croatia.com) does business from 7am to 8pm Monday through Saturday; 8am to 1pm Sunday. Atlas books excursions, finds private accommodations, and it is Pula's American Express agent. Istra Sun-Way at Kandlerova 34 (tel. 052/381-329; www.istra-sunway.hr) is open from 8am to midnight and offers accommodations and excursions that range from island tours to land adventures. Istra books tours to the interior, so if you don't want to rent a car, they can take you to some of the smaller inland towns.

You can surf online at Enigma Computer Center, one of the better Internet centers in Pula. Enigma, is located at Kandlerova 19 (tel. 052/381-615) and open daily from 10am to midnight June 1 to September; from 10am to 2pm and 5 to 8pm the rest of the year. The air-conditioned center sits between the cathedral and Augustus's Temple, and management provides users with free music, sweets, and drinks.

Getting There

Pula's busy harbor enjoys healthy shipping and transportation traffic. Tourists can make both regional and international ferry connections between other towns in Croatia and Italy here.

Getting Around

Pula is a very walkable city even outside its center, and its bus system can get you almost anywhere you need to go in town. Beyond that, a large number of bus routes run from Pula to Zagreb to Rijeka, and from the Istrian cities of Rovinj, Vrsar, and Porec plus the gateway city of Trieste in Italy and coastal towns in Slovenia. If you want to explore the hills and valleys of the Istrian interior, you'll need a car.
