Frommer's Review
Set between the beachfront and the main street of Cortecito, this is the most enduringly popular local dive in town. Don't expect elaborate food, fancy sauces, or social prestige: In fact, when you approach the outdoor vestibule that prefaces the place, you might think you've entered the forecourt to a garage. The allure here is the ultrafresh seafood that's simply but superbly grilled to order from a chalkboard menu. A battery of outdoor grills lies near the entrance to a dining area whose tables are positioned beneath palm-frond gazebos overlooking a crowded stretch of rather narrow beach. Additional seating is upstairs, within an air-conditioned dining room that resembles a log cabin perched on stilts above Main Street. Some guests don't bother to consult the menu, but order their meal based on whatever is sputtering over coals or displayed on ice as they enter. Platters of grilled fish, freshwater crab, or lobster will be accompanied by lime-flavored butter sauce, salad, and your choice of baked potatoes or french fries. As an alternative, try the paella, spaghetti with shellfish, creole-style beefsteak, fish brochettes "Captain Cook," and/or a combination platter of grilled shrimp and calamari. Beer is often the accompaniment for anything served here, perhaps preceded by a rum-based cocktail.
Note: If you phone this place the day of your intended visit, the staff will probably offer to send a motorboat to pick you up at whatever suitable pier lies closest to your hotel, without any additional charge. (A US$5 (£2.60) tip to the boat attendants, however, would be appreciated.)
