Sivory Punta Cana

This is the most northerly, and the most upscale, non-all-inclusive hotel in Punta Cana, the quasi-experimental offshoot and personal statement of the heir to a collection of well-respected, mostly urban hotels, the Catalonia group of Barcelona. Clients tend to be from Spain and points along the East Coast of America. There's something posh but minimalist about this place.

Elegant and ultra-hip touches abound: The cocktail bar features only a series of strong horizontal surfaces, a smiling attendant, and a noteworthy absence of bottles and glasses: Tell the attendant what you want, and it will materialize, pristine and elegantly simple, before you. The path between check-in and your ultra-comfortable, ultramodern accommodations requires passage across a footbridge that spans a Japanese-inspired reflecting pool.

Know before you go that there are only three drawbacks to this place: (1) It's isolated enough, and small enough, to remain meditative and calm even at times when you wish that it wasn't. If you want a go-go nightlife, this is not the place for you. Come with a lover or companion, if you can -- either that or a good book, because it's very much a place for contented couples; (2) it takes about an hour to reach the place from the Punta Cana airport; and (3) its swimming pool is not particularly spectacular -- but when confronted with that gorgeous beach, its rows of comfortable chaise longues, and a higher staff-to-guest ratio than virtually any other hotel in Punta Cana, that hardly matters.
