Nightlife

Though Québec City can't pretend to match the volume of nighttime diversions of exuberant Montréal, there are more than enough after-dark activities to occupy visitors' evenings during an average stay. Apart from theatrical productions, which are almost always in French, knowledge of the language is rarely necessary to enjoy nighttime entertainment.

The neighborhood for each venue below is listed with the address: Lower Town and Upper Town in Vieux-Québec; Vieux-Port, adjacent to Lower Town; Parliament Hill; Montcalm, the residential neighborhood just west of Parliament Hill; and St-Roch.

Summer Fireworks -- From late July to mid-August, the city hosts a grand fireworks competition, Les Grands Feux Loto-Québec, at scenic Montmorency Falls 10 minutes north of city center.

The Performing Arts

Classical Music, Opera & Dance -- The region's premier classical groups are Orchestre Symphonique de Québec (tel. 418/643-8486; www.osq.org), Canada's oldest symphony; Opéra de Québec (tel. 418/529-0688; www.operadequebec.qc.ca); and Les Violons du Roy (tel. 418/692-3026; www.violonsduroy.com), a string orchestra established in 1985 that features young musicians in the early stages of their careers. It performs at the Raoul-Jobin hall in the centrally located Palais Montcalm. The orchestra and opera both perform at Grand Théâtre de Québec .

Concert Halls & Performance Venues -- Many of the city's churches host sacred and secular music concerts, as well as special Christmas festivities. Look for posters on outdoor kiosks around the city and check with the tourist office for listings.

The Club & Music Scene

Québec City's Festival d'Eté (Summer Festival) bills itself as Canada's largest outdoor arts festival. It's held in Vieux-Québec and St-Roch for 11 days each July. Highlights include the free jazz and folk combos who perform in an open-air theater next to City Hall. The festival brings in 200 groups of artists from Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America showcasing theater, music, and dance. For details, call tel. 888/992-5200, or check www.infofestival.com.

Boites à Chansons & Other Music Clubs -- If you just want to stroll and see what you find, there are three principal streets to choose from for nightlife, all near or just beyond Parliament Hill: rue St-Jean inside the walls, Grande-Allée outside the walls, and avenue Cartier in the Montcalm neighborhood.

Bars

If you're young and looking for fun, keep in mind the Grande-Allée strip just past Place George V, where a beery collegiate atmosphere can sometimes rule as the evening wears on. The bars listed here, however, are removed from Grande-Allée's melee. Note that smoking has been banned in bars throughout the province since 2006.
