Frommer's Review

Québec's magical "castle" opened in 1893 and has been wowing visitors ever since. The turreted hotel has hosted Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, and during World War II, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt had the entire place to themselves for a conference. It was built in phases, following the landline, so the wide halls take crooked paths (on the hotel's 100th birthday in 1993, management added a 66-room wing, and because "The Château" serves as the very symbol of the city, care was taken to replicate the original architectural style throughout). Luxurious rooms are outfitted with regal decor and elegant château furnishings, bathrooms have marble touches, every mattress was replaced in 2006 and 2007, and some 400 rooms were renovated in the same period as well. Anyone can stay on the more princely (and pricey) Fairmont Gold floors, which have a separate concierge and reception and a lounge with an honor bar in the afternoons and breakfast in the mornings. Highly variable room prices depend on size, location, how recently the room was renovated, and view, with river views garnering top dollar. But lower-priced rooms overlooking the inner courtyard can be eminently appealing: The gabled view is quite romantic, and children might imagine Harry Potter swooping by in a Quidditch match. The Véranda Saint-Laurent is a casual piano bar with dancing on the weekends. An archaeological excavation of parts of the Terrace Dufferin will continue through 2008, so ask for a room not directly on top of the work.

Facilities: 3 restaurants (fusion, international); bar; indoor pool and kiddie pool with outdoor terrace; expansive health club; spa; whirlpool; concierge; business center; Wi-Fi in lobby and bar; shopping arcade; salon; limited room service; in-room massage; babysitting; same-day dry cleaning; executive floors.
