The sprawling lobby isn't especially beguiling, even though a C$4-million renovation was completed in 2004. But there is a new wing (ask for a room there) and two serviceable restaurants on the premises, and the proximity to the rue St-Jean restaurant-and-bar scene is a plus for many. An added extra is the indoor pool, rare in this city. The hotel, which with its lobby of stained glass and maroon curtains has an air of a grand old-timer, sprawls all the way from the main entrance on Côte de Palais to adjacent St-Jean, zigzagging around a couple of stores. A long staircase reaches the lobby, but elevators make the trip to most of the rooms. All 156 rooms were redecorated in 2002. Upping its appeal, the hotel installed a spa in 2004, with packages including body wraps in mud or algae or chocolate (!), Swedish massages, exfoliations with sea salt, and "pressotherapy." Prices start at C$40 (US$35/£17).
