Frommer's Review
The latest entry in the roster of Basse-Ville boutique hotels, this is owned by the same people as the adjacent Auberge Saint-Pierre . They share a bar, but that's the end of the similarities. Where the auberge is faux-country in style, 71 is super-slick and ultra-contemporary. It used to be a bank, and it retains those lofty ceilings and capacious dimensions while being distinctly mellower. Room no. 620, for instance, has 15-foot cream-colored walls, putty-colored curtains that extend nearly ceiling to floor, blonde-wood floors, and charcoal tile in the bathroom -- cool without being chilly. It's warmed up with deep-red velveteen chairs and cloth panels that serve as closet doors. Bathrooms are in the open style common to the boutique hotels of the area, with just seafoam-green glass separating the shower from the sink area and shower nozzles of the fashionable big-disk, rainforest variety, flooding straight down (all rooms have showers, and four have bathtubs as well). All rooms are on floors four to seven and many feature bird's-eye views of the tops of the 19th-century buildings of Old Québec, the St. Lawrence River, the ramparts of the fortress wall, or the Château Frontenac. Café 71, on the first floor, is open for breakfast, snacks during the day, and espresso 24 hours.
