Frommer's Review
The proudly Victorian Barachois (say bar-a-schwa) Inn was built in 1870, and it is a soothing retreat for road-weary travelers located amid a cluster of historic buildings on a gentle rise overlooking Rustico Bay. Factor in some time to just stroll around the neighborhood and enjoy both the village and the inn's tidy garden. It's topped with a lovely mansard roof adorned with pedimented dormers, and it boasts a fine garden and historic furnishings throughout. Innkeepers Judy and Gary MacDonald bought the place as derelict property in 1982 and have done an outstanding job bringing it back from the brink, adding modern art along the way to soften the staid Victorian architecture.
The main house is furnished with quality period antiques; the two rooms on the third floor are a bit cozier than the spacious second-floor suites, but those guests will feel far from the world when tucked beneath the slanted eaves. Room no. 1 has a canopy bed dating from the 1840s and an unusually large bathroom; room no. 3 has a claw-foot tub and a stall shower. There's a second, newer building known as MacDonald House next door with four additional executive-style rooms and perks like a sauna, exercise bike, and meeting room. Its architecture nicely echoes that of the original structure. Be sure to inquire about the 3-night "special occasions" package if you're celebrating an anniversary, which includes an Anne of Green Gables-themed carriage ride, a gourmet dinner at a local restaurant, and a packed picnic lunch with your accommodations.
