After a NZ$12-million (US$8.5-million/£4.3-million) upgrade, this central hotel has moved several notches higher in the style and service stakes. All of its 139 rooms have been completely refurbished and its chic, innovative lobby, bars, and restaurant make a fabulous first impression. Rooms here are lakeview, mountainview, or courtyardview, and they're priced accordingly. In reality, they're all exactly the same -- pleasantly decorated in crisp white and earth-toned color schemes, with good bathrooms and excellent desks. I love the sleek, contemporary look of this place and it's in a great spot.
