Dar al Batoul ReviewThe Khribeche family have turned this former merchant's house into a peaceful dar with low-key service. The central courtyard (covered in winter) is a pleasant blend of simple comfort and traditional style, with tall columns, black-and-white tiling, hand-carved stucco, and potted plants. The Diwan room -- a former antechamber used to greet guests -- is now a warm, split-level reading room with a small library and TV. Other communal rooms and the large, brightly colored Alia bedroom lead off from the courtyard. A first-floor terrace with original wood railings lends access to the other bedrooms. Compact and tastefully furnished, each room is individual and true to the style of medina maisons d'hôte -- small windows and not a lot of privacy. The roof terrace affords a glorious sweeping view of the medina. The family is very unobtrusive and hands-off in their service (only French and Arabic are spoken), preferring to leave their guests to enjoy quality personal time. Lunches and dinners, often eaten with the family, can be arranged upon request. The dar is easy to locate, and guarded parking is close by. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
