Frommer's Review
This popular spot has enjoyed sizzling press -- it was prominently featured in Food & Wine magazine in October 2004. The most stylish wine restaurant in Raleigh occupies one of the Glenwood South district's least impressive buildings -- a redbrick structure that once held Pine State Creamery. Inside an angular and minimalist dining room focused around display cases of food, the chef concocts a cuisine designed to bring out the flavors of the foods and wines featured, albeit with a European consciousness that has people thinking they've landed in Spain, France, or even a cosmopolitan corner of Denmark. The menu changes frequently but might include crispy N.C. soft-shell crab with frisée and red onion salad in a Banyuls rémoulade; braised Kurobuta pork shoulder with chévre gnocchi, lentils, roasted beets, and mint; and a sophisticated array of European cheeses, selling for around $14 for a well-selected platter. Desserts might include El Rey molten chocolate cake with vanilla bourbon ice cream accompanied by any of several kinds of unusual herbal teas, including Egyptian chamomile.
