Tällberg takes top billing in Dalarna, but if you can't stay there because of heavy bookings (a likely possibility in summer), then Rättvik is a most delightful runner-up. With some of the best hotels in the district, Rättvik is one of the most popular resorts bordering Lake Siljan. In summer, conducted tours begin here and go around Lake Siljan. Culture and tradition have long been associated with Rättvik; you'll find peasant costumes, folk dancing, Dalarna paintings, arts and crafts, fiddle music, and "church boats" -- flamboyantly painted boats in which entire congregations are floated for Sunday services. The old style of architecture is still prevalent, and you'll see many timber houses. Carpenters and painters from Rättvik are known for their craftsmanship.
