No matter which part of the Kvarner Gulf region you explore, you’ll probably go through Rijeka, which is connected to Zagreb by autocesta (highway). A once grand industrial port, Rijeka’s 19th-century Austro-Hungarian buildings have fallen into slight disrepair, and are now in the process of being gradually being restored. Most people breeze straight through on their way to a more restful destination, either on the mainland coast or one of the nearby islands.
