Frommer's Review
The inland state of Minas Gerais is looked on as a culinary capital of sorts in Brazil, the source of down-home hearty comfort food. Bar do Mineiro is a little piece of Minas in Santa Teresa. Not limited to food, this combo restaurant, art gallery, and antiques shop also serves up an amazing variety of cachaça (the potent sugar-cane liquor found in caipirinhas). Also on offer are cachaça infusions: fruit and spices are soaked in the fiery cane alcohol, adding flavor and color to the booze. Supposedly this too is typically Mineiro, though to tell the truth the owner is such a homeboy, he'd likely claim beer was a Minas invention. About the food, however, there can be no doubt: Meals are hearty and portions generous. Appetizers include sausages and pasteis -- savory pastries with a variety of stuffings, including sausage, cheese, or cabbage. The frango com quiabo (stewed chicken with okra) is popular, as is the Feijão tropeiro -- much thicker than the feijoada, this bean dish is made with brown instead of black beans.
