Tivoli & the Villas

32km (20 miles) east of Rome

Tivoli, known as Tibur to the ancient Romans, is 32km (20 miles) east of Rome on Via Tiburtina, about an hour's drive with traffic. If you don't have a car, take Metro Line B to the end of the line, the Rebibbia station. After exiting the station, board a CoTral bus (tel. 800-174471; www.cotralspa.it) for the trip the rest of the way to Tivoli. Generally, buses depart about every 20 minutes during the day. For information about the town, check with Azienda Autonoma di Turismo, Piazzale Nazioni Unite (no phone), Tivoli. Hours are Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 1pm and 4 to 6pm.
