Once a convent, this graceful, atmospheric building is a longtime favorite. Built around a medieval bell tower off the Fori Imperiali, the Hotel Forum offers old-fashioned elegance and accommodations that range from tasteful to opulent. The midsize rooms, which look out on the sights of the ancient city, are well appointed with antiques, mirrors, and Oriental rugs. About half the bathrooms have tubs; the others have showers. The hotel's lounges are conservative, with paneled walls and furnishings that combine Italian and French provincial styles. Dining is an event in the rooftop-garden restaurant; reserve well in advance.
