Frommer's Review
This grand old favorite is experiencing a renaissance. Pietro Mascagni composed his Nerone in one of the guest rooms here, and Vincent Price stayed here while making what he called, "all those bad movies." When you see the very grand decor, you'll understand why. This hotel's public rooms are vintage 19th century and contain stained-glass skylights, massive crystal chandeliers, potted palms, inlaid marble floors, and a life-size stone lion guarding the ornate stairway. The theatrical grandeur of the lobby carries over into the suites, where the furnishings mimic the gilded-age splendor of the public rooms on a smaller scale. But the standard guest rooms are just that -- standard. They're contemporary, midsize, and streamlined, with efficient but comfortable furniture, and large marble bathrooms with tub/shower combinations.
