Frommer's Review
We prefer this place, designed in 1924 by the Hungarian architect Jozef Vago, to the overpriced glory of The Hassler next door. The hotel looks deluxe (although it's officially rated first class) from the minute you walk through the revolving door, where a smartly uniformed doorman greets you. Once inside this palace, built in the 19th century on the site of the ancient Gardens of Lucullus, you'll find Oriental rugs, marble tables, brocade furniture, and an English-speaking staff. Endless corridors lead to a maze of ornamental lounges. Some of the public rooms have a sort of 1930s elegance, and others are strictly baroque; in the middle of it all is an open courtyard.
The guest rooms and public areas are decorated in a beautifully classic and yet up-to-date way. The higher rooms with balconies have panoramic views of Rome, and everyone's welcome to use the rooftop terrace with the same view. Most units are small but boast chintz-covered fabrics and fine beds. The spacious bathrooms have deluxe toiletries and generous shelf space.
