Frommer's Review
If you want 19th-century Rome, check in elsewhere: If you prefer a hyper-modern atmosphere, the Es. Hotel is for you. This hotel is so dramatic, innovative, and high-tech that its opening sparked a bit of environmental recovery in the old but decaying Esquilino quarter on the fringe of the Termini. A government-rated five-star luxe hotel, it is posh and severe, yet comfortably modern. It's got everything from a Turkish bath to a business center.
Don't judge the hotel by its rather dull seven-story exterior, which resembles an office building. Inside, the lobby showcases the ruins of a 2nd-century A.D. Roman road. The midsize to spacious bedrooms emphasize minimalist Japanese designs, with wool rugs, glass desks, and plastic chairs in either orange or pea green. Tubs and showers are installed directly behind wooden beds and are separated by low screens. Rooms are soundproofed; some open onto balconies with city views.
In summer, a sun deck and pool are available. Especially alluring is the top-floor fitness center and the on-site spa. The top-floor restaurant provides a modern Italian cuisine.
