Frommer's Review
This neoclassical palace overlooking the Piazza della Repubblica at the rail terminal also fronts the Baths of Diocletian and Michelangelo's Basilica degli Angeli. One of Rome's latest government-rated five-star luxury hotels, the Exedra is a study in modern elegance combined with the romance of the past. It's luxury living on a grand scale from the spacious standard double rooms to a variety of suites. Our favorite rooms are the top-floor accommodations in the Clementino Wing, each with bare brick walls and the original ceiling beams. You'll find creamy marble, lush carpeting, discreet lighting, and high ceilings throughout the building, while rooms feature such decorative notes as printed leather headboards and whorled silk wall coverings. The marble bathrooms are luxurious, with tub/shower combinations. You can take morning coffee on the rooftop garden terrace overlooking the Fountain of the Naiads. Later you can retreat to one of Rome's best hotel spas. The spa is linked to the rooftop swimming pool by a glass elevator.
The restaurants celebrate Rome in the 1950s and 1960s -- for example, La Frustra was inspired by Fellini's Oscar-winning film 8 1/2, and Tazio is a reverential tongue-in-cheek celebration of Tazio Secchiaroli, daddy of the dreaded paparazzi. For a taste of those heady days of La Dolce Vita, head for the Champagnerie.
