Thackeray's House

You'll get a bit of history and the finest food in town, as this 1660 house was once inhabited by novelist William Makepeace Thackeray, who wrote Tunbridge Toys here. Owner/Chef Richard Phillips has created an elegant atmosphere, backed by attentive service, for his specialties. Care goes into all his dishes, and many have flair. Flavors and textures are beautifully balanced in such dishes as butter-poached lobster with a saffron linguine or medallions of roast monkfish with Parma ham. For starters try the venison carpaccio with beet or layers of oak-smoked salmon with young spinach and a lime crème fraîche.
