Built as a family home in the 1890s by the grain-empire Burdett family, this is an imposing Victorian B&B overlooking U.S. Route 7 on the north side of town. It's elaborate on the outside, but even more so on the inside; gracefully curving walls, stamped plaster wainscoting, oak trim, and leather wallpaper are some of the noteworthy details. The downstairs parlors are formal in an Edwardian sort of way, and guest rooms are surprisingly spacious. Rooms facing Route 7 are a bit noisier, but the house was solidly wrought and seems to buffer most of it. The third-floor rooms are generally less detailed, but the Washington and the Rutland -- both large and quiet -- are still two of the best in the house. The Washington room was also one of two units recently outfitted with a Jacuzzi tub; the Orleans room is the other. The Franklin room sports a really nice brick fireplace.
