Attractions

In Samedan

The village (1,548m/5,077 ft.) has its own ski lift and ice-skating rink, plus a ski school. In the summer it's ideal for mountain walks and for climbing. The tourist office will provide maps. Visitors can fish or play tennis and golf. When there's snow, it's possible to take a horse-drawn sleigh to St. Moritz in less than an hour, and all mountain transportation can be reached in a short time.

In Celerina

Celerina has an old Romanesque church, St. John's (San Gian), with a painted ceiling dating from 1478.

The Cresta run, a mecca for bobsledders, starts from St. Moritz and terminates near Celerina. The village also has ice rinks for curling and skating, a toboggan run, and a ski school. Winter packages for skiing, cross-country, and curling are offered, as well as summer guided mountain-bike tours with a picnic included.

Several interesting conducted tours are offered in the summer through the tourist office. An experienced guide will take you on an explorative tour through the Swiss National Park, or you can join a botanical excursion to see alpine flowers in bloom. Strenuous geological and mineralogical tours are also offered, and you can make an exciting journey from the Diavolezza over the glacier to Morteratsch. The latter tour is offered only in the spring and summer.

Celerina (1,702m/5,583 ft.) is known for its belvederes and panoramic views. One such view is of Piz Nair, at 3,251m (10,663 ft.). To reach it, you can take a cable car from St. Moritz, departing every 20 minutes daily from 8:30am to 5pm. You'll ride from St. Moritz to Corviglia. At Corviglia you board another cable car between Corviglia and Piz Nair. The round-trip passage for this ride is 51F to 67F ($42-$55/£22-£29) for adults and 34F to 45F ($28-$37/£15-£19) for children. The circular panorama takes in the Bernina summits. For information, call tel. 081/839-80-15.

You can also visit Muottas Muragl (2,412m/7,911 ft.). From the lower station at Punt Muragle, funicular departures are about every 30 minutes. The round-trip fare is 29F ($24/£13) for adults and 16F ($13/£6.75) for children. You'll have views of the Upper Engadine Gap, and in the distance you can see the peaks of the Bernina massif. You'll probably see ibex and marmots as you take mountain walks. For information, call tel. 081/842-83-08.
