Coconuts Beach Club & Spa ReviewFormer Hollywood show-biz lawyers Barry and Jennifer Rose began developing this resort in the 1980s. Since then they have built an eclectic mix of motel-style rooms reached by treehouselike stairs, lagoonside bungalows, stunning "Royal Villas," and one-bedroom overwater bungalows, the only such structures in Samoa. Ashore, the beach bungalows and villas have outdoorsy bathrooms with showers pouring down rock walls into sunken tubs. Lots of natural wood creates unusual accents throughout, such as tree limbs used as posts for king-size beds. The thatched-roof bar directly beside the beach is a highlight here. The kitchen produces excellent food under the direction of former Hawaii restaurateur Michael "Mika" Pirics, whose specialties include local lobster and mud crabs from the mangrove estuary. Erosion has wiped away much of the beach, so a rock breakwater fronts most of the property. You can walk around the breakwater, and swim out to a lava wall, which creates a good snorkeling area. And there's a fine stretch of beach between here and Sinalei Reef Resort & Spa , which provides a range of watersports for guests at both resorts. A gecko-shaped pool with a gecko tile mosaic bottom sits just behind the breakwater. No kids under 3 are accepted here. | 2 stars | Frommer's Very Highly Recommended | |
| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
