When “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” author Dave Eggers wanted to set up a literary salon to inspire young people to write, the city said his space was zoned for retail. Naturally, he opened a pirate supply store as a sort of front for the tutoring, mentoring, and writing that goes on just beyond the displays of maritime knickknacks. Pick up a bottle of “Scurvy be Gone” or tattoo remover. Stock up on eye patches or glass eyes. When you order your custom hook, make sure to specify whether it is for the right or left hand. All proceeds from the store support up-and-coming young writers who hone their craft in the classroom in the back. Open daily from noon to 6pm.
