Review of Buckhorn Saloon & Museum

If you like your educational experiences accompanied by a tall cold brew, this is the place for you. With its large stuffed animals, mounted antlers, and wax museum version of history, this collection fulfills every out-of-stater's stereotype of what a Texas museum might be like. Many will find it overpriced, but what sets the Buckhorn apart and will make it of interest to others is the age of the collection, started back in the 1880s, which lends it the character of an old curio museum. It's been modernized somewhat, which has removed some of the old charm, but much remains. A lot of the items on exhibit are precisely the kind of objects that would have been of interest to an earlier public: artwork made with rattlesnake rattles, dressed fleas, freaks of nature such as a two-headed calf, cowboy and Indian memorabilia, shrunken heads. Many of these things are stuck in the corners of the exhibition rooms because they defy the semblance of order that the curators have imposed. But it's this character (and the saloon) that really sets the Buckhorn apart from any other museum I know.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
