La Gloria Review

If you're not going to Mexico (and these days, who is?) you can still enjoy that country's delicious street food at this attractive, playfully decorated eatery at the Pearl Brewery. You're not going to see yellow cheddar or American cheese here; this place does it up Mexican style, finishing several dishes with a light crumbling of a fresh farmer's cheese or a dried cotija and perhaps a light drizzle of Mexican cream. Get in line to place your order from a wide-ranging menu that includes dishes from across the country. On the back of the menu is a bit of explanation of the different items, and the staff is happy to explain further. It's clear that chef-owner Johnny Hernandez and his staff put a lot of thought into how to bring these Mexican delicacies to America. Not everything is exactly how you would get it in its native land, but who of us can resist temptation to improve dishes according to our own tastes? The only thing I would avoid are the tlayudas, which are near impossible to reproduce outside of Oaxaca.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
