Biga on the Banks ReviewThis is one of the only fine-dining spots on the River Walk worth visiting. Biga on the Banks serves international cuisine with a nod to local flavors. Fittingly, it's located on the ground floor of the International Center building. You'll enter a dining room that is modern and airy with high ceilings, clean lines, and large windows looking out over the river. The chef/owner is Bruce Auden, a Brit who found his way to San Antonio, where he has won much acclaim from the national press for his cooking. The menu changes daily, but you're certain to find his popular Angus beef rib-eye served with Shiner Bock-battered onion rings and habañero catsup. You'll also find a number of Asian-inspired dishes, including lettuce wraps of minced venison, buffalo, ostrich, and pheasant accompanied by two spicy dipping sauces, or duck confit bao buns (those unearthly doughy balls filled with seasoned meat that can be slightly salty, spicy, and sweet). For dessert, order the signature sticky toffee pudding from Mr. Auden's homeland. If you're willing to eat before 6:30pm or after 9pm, you can enjoy a three-course prix fixe for $37 per person or four-course for $43. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
