Liberty Bar Review

The Liberty Bar has just completed the move from the old, leaning saloon building on Josephine Street to its new location on South Alamo. The new home makes for a completely different atmosphere, but how could it be otherwise when moving from a former brothel to a former convent? The new location is actually more comfortable and less cramped, with dining areas on the ground floor and upstairs by the bar. The rustic, hewn chairs are actually solid and comfortable, and the tables well separated.

The cooking remains about the same, making an innovative use of many ingredients. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous. On my last visit, I sampled a goat cheese appetizer in a sauce made with chile cascabel and piloncillo (Mexican raw brown sugar), served with griddled bread; a perfectly dressed green salad with roasted hazelnuts, apples, and bits of pecorino cheese and prosciutto; and a grilled chicken breast wrapped in hoja santa (Mexican herb). Pay attention to the daily specials, which I've had good luck with. For something lighter, try one of the innovative sandwiches, such as the portobello with smoked Gouda and saffron aioli. Bread is made in house and is used in the classic bread pudding with hard sauce. The Liberty Bar is a great option for vegetarians.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
