Frommer's Review
This place is timeless in so many ways. First, you've got to love the look of the adobe and neon exterior. On the inside, you have the wood paneled walls (both real and imitation) adorned with everything from antlers to letters of recognition. You'll also find comfortable old-style tables and chairs, classic booths, and a solid wood lunch counter, which is particularly welcoming. The staff, you can tell by looking, has been here forever. Example: After a little chat, the waitress says that she's the "new kid," having worked here for only 8 years.
Comfort food is the draw here. Favorites include chicken-fried steak (and the chicken-fried steak sandwich), fried shrimp, and onion rings, not to mention the meatloaf on Thursdays, and chicken and dumplings -- the ultimate in comfort food -- served on Fridays starting at 5pm and ending sometime on Saturday when it runs out. All the pies are made in-house, of course. Among them, there's always an apple and at least one other fruit pie, as well as a cream pie or two, and usually a pecan pie. Note that this isn't the place for people who are in the habit of dining late. The locals come early, and they have a point: Chicken-fried steak requires time to be digested.
