Westin La Cantera

This resort is grander and less homey than the Hyatt. Golfers will be drawn to its two championship courses (in addition to the much-praised La Cantera, there's a newer Arnold Palmer-designed course) plus a golf academy. In addition to being close to the theme park Six Flags Fiesta Texas, the Westin is also near the newest and best shopping mall in San Antonio -- the Shops at La Cantera. This resort is more romantic, too, with rocky outcroppings and gorgeous views from its perch on one of the highest points in the San Antonio area. Remnants of the limestone quarry on which the resort was built were incorporated into the four swimming pools interconnected with bridges and channels and a dramatic waterfall.

Rooms are large and are decorated in mix of modern and traditional furnishings. And, as with other Westins, the bed is quite comfortable. Bathrooms are large, and there's plenty of closet space. If you want to go larger, the junior suites offer quite a bit more for the extra cost. Many rooms have balconies with views of the neighboring hills. The "casitas" are units in a section set apart from the main building, which has its own pool. These are larger, quieter, and more private. Each comes with its own patio.
