Frommer's Review
You know what they say about judging a book by its cover? Located just a musket shot from the Alamo, the Emily Morgan was named after the mulatto slave mistress of Mexican general Santa Anna, who was reputed to have spied on him for the Texas independence fighters. It resides in a 1926 Gothic Revival-style medical arts center, replete with gargoyles, said to have been placed there to help the doctors ward off diseases. But there's little to suggest either battlefields or things medicinal inside. As a result of a recent extreme makeover, the rooms have a light, contemporary feel, designed to appeal to a young and affluent crowd who go for the pared-down look popularized by the W chain. Any industrial chic coldness is offset by lots of dark, burnished wood and such touches as a lit votive candle at turndown. For all its perks -- 250-count sheets, Aveda bath products, CD players, 27-inch TVs, and (in 115 of the rooms) jetted tubs -- this place is considerably less expensive than many comparable hotels on the river, and its combination of hipness, luxury, and history is hard to beat. The hotel has a very liberal pet policy and even includes cat and dog treats on the room-service menu. Smoking is not permitted in any of the guest rooms.
