Sandwich has a number of motels along Route 6A, but the one with the best location is Sandy Neck Motel at 669 Rte. 6A, East Sandwich (tel. 800/564-3992 or 508/362-3992; www.sandyneck.com), which sits at the entrance to the road leading to Sandy Neck, the best beach in these parts. Rates are $119 double and $150 to $250 for one- and two-room efficiencies. It's closed November to mid-April.

Betsy's Diner in Falmouth -- This classic 1950s diner offers all the old faves, plus home-baked pastries.

The Clam Shack in Falmouth -- Children will love the size of this place (it's Lilliputian), the plain fare, and all the activity on the harbor.

Landfall in the village of Woods Hole in Falmouth -- This is one of Falmouth's most atmospheric dining spots, set on the edge of Great Harbor and decorated with large stained glass windows and salvaged wood. The traditional Cape Cod fare and spacious tables make it a good pick for a large family dinner.

Marshland Restaurant on 6A in Sandwich -- This casual diner serves three meals a day, and the kids menu includes all the traditional favorites. Young ones might enjoy sitting at the counter and watching the hustle-bustle of this very popular little establishment.

New Seabury Resort in New Seabury -- Families enjoy the 3 1/2-mile private beach and the nearby shops and restaurants.

Spring Garden Inn in East Sandwich -- With its spacious tree-shaded backyard and pool, this well-maintained motel is understandably popular with families.

Wingscorton Farm Inn in East Sandwich -- What could beat a working farm -- with a beach within walking distance -- for both education and fun?
