This church-turned-inn right in the center of Sandwich Village is about the most creative renovation on Cape Cod. The turreted 1879 rectory, called The Painted Lady, has creatively decorated, romantic rooms with queen-size retrofitted antique beds, a claw-foot tub (or Jacuzzi) for every room, and a scattering of fireplaces and private balconies. The third floor, with its attic rooms and its delightful Alice in Wonderland mural leading up to the belfry, is perfect for families with children. Two of the adjacent rooms can be rented together as a suite. Next door is the Abbey, a former church that owner Chris Wilson has converted into six unique deluxe guest rooms, several with fireplaces and whirlpool baths, and a very fine restaurant. The Abbey rooms are painted vivid colors and tucked cleverly into sections of this old church. One room features a stained-glass window; another has angel windows. All of the Abbey rooms have Jacuzzis. Mr. Wilson also owns the Village House, located next door, with six rooms decorated in a French country style within an 1860 Federal-style house.
