Frommer's Review
This lovely and interesting resort is set right on the banks of the Mopan River just across from the border town of Benque Viejo. In fact, you must reach the resort by crossing the river in the resort's little diesel-powered ferry. The resort is run as a super all-inclusive, meaning aside from a very limited number of entrance and border crossing fees (if you go to Tikal), you should have virtually no out-of-pocket expenses beyond the hotel rates, which include all food, drinks, tips, and taxes, as well as a full menu of tours and activities, and transfers to and from the international airport.
The 12 individual bungalows are spread along the hotel's lush property lining the banks of the river, so all have a view of the flowing water. The bungalows are quite spacious, with high-pitched thatch roofs, varnished wood floors and walls, and plenty of dresser and closet space. I find the bathrooms just a tad small and not quite up to the luxurious standards set throughout the rest of the operation. Quite a few of the units come with two twin beds, so if you want a true king-size bed, be sure to specify. Three of the units are suites, and in addition to being larger, they come with a kitchenette and comfortable sitting area.
Given all that is included in the package prices, the rates here are actually quite reasonable. Still, this is not the place for independent and spontaneous travelers. Tours are scheduled on a rotating basis, with the rotation repeating every 6 days or so. So, if you absolutely must visit Tikal during a 3-day stay, make sure it's on the rotation during your days there. Dinners are usually served buffet-style. Breakfasts are a la carte, and lunches are often packed lunches served during the day's tour or activity. Overall, the food is quite well done and varied. A minimum stay of 3 nights is required. The resort is closed July through October.
