Frommer's Review
Clarissa Falls, which are really more rapids than waterfalls, and the jade-green waters of the Mopan River are the backdrop for this resort, one of my favorite budget lodgings in Cayo. Situated on an 800-acre (320-hectare) working cattle ranch, the resort boasts a range of accommodations from one deluxe suite to a series of individual cabins to a dormitory-style bunkhouse. The individual cabins here are fairly basic, with cement floors, bamboo walls, simple beds, and little else. However, the spartan decor is more than compensated for by the beautiful surroundings. The suite is quite nicely done and features a full kitchen and dining area. There's also a camping area here that even has a hookup for an RV.
The open-air restaurant here serves excellent Belizean and Mexican cuisine for very reasonable prices, and sits atop a small Mayan ruin. Owner Chena Gálvez is extremely personable, and staff members can help arrange boats and inner-tube rentals; horseback riding is also available. If you'd like to just visit for the day, you can swim in the river and picnic for BZ$2 (US$1), which is a very popular activity on weekends (if you crave peace and tranquillity, visit on a weekday). Clarissa Falls Resort is about a mile (1.6km) down a dirt road, off the highway about 4 miles (6km) west of San Ignacio. The bus to Benque Viejo will drop you at the turnoff.
