One of the most sophisticated Italian restaurants in San Juan, La Scala caters to discerning diners who appreciate the nuances of fine cuisine and service. The decor includes neutral colors, stucco arches, and murals. The menu lists just about the entire repertoire of northern Italian cuisine. You'll find a specialty version of Caesar salad, fresh mushrooms in garlic sauce, and a succulent half-melted version of fresh mozzarella in carozza. The fresh fish and seafood are flown in from New York and Boston. Specialties include halibut cooked in parchment, rigatoni with shiitake mushrooms and ricotta, and rack of lamb in red-wine sauce. Most meals here are memorable, and the cookery, for the most part, is creative and delicate. Service is attentive.
