Frommer's Review
Originally built in the early 1960s as a movie theater, and known to many locals as Asylum, this is one of the best known of San Juan's gay and lesbian discos. With laser beams, artful lighting, and a warren of stairs, hallways, and a panoramic balcony (site of a bar outfitted, Moroccan-style, like something you'd have expected in The Casbah), it tries to evoke the heady days of New York's Studio 54, sometimes with mixed results. Crowds here are young and -- at least at first glance -- notoriously fickle, sometimes staying away in droves until the impossibly late hipster-ish hour of 1am. Despite a highly visible police presence, in squad cars with klieg lights flashing, that likes to hang out in front of this place, we nonetheless highly recommend taxiing to and from a point directly in front of this place during the impossibly late hours when it's jumping. Dance music presented inside, much to the regret of anyone who loves Latino dance music, is relentlessly committed to reggae, house, hip-hop, and garage. Open Thursday 9pm to 6am; Friday 9:30pm to 6am; Saturday 10pm to 7am; Sunday 9pm to 6am.
