Restaurants

In addition to the restaurants listed here, Friday Harbor has several other places where you can get a quick, simple meal. About a block from the top of the ferry lanes is The Market Chef, 225 A St. (tel. 360/378-4546), a combination espresso bar and gourmet take-out restaurant that also bakes outrageously good chocolate-chip cookies. This place is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to 4pm. If you're staying someplace with a kitchen and want fresh seafood for dinner, stop by Friday Harbor Seafood (tel. 360/378-5779), on the main dock in the Friday Harbor marina. This seafood market also sells smoked fish (including succulent smoked scallops), which makes great picnic fare.

For a decent latte, head to San Juan Coffee Roasting, 18 Cannery Landing (tel. 360/378-4443), on the dock at the ferry landing, or the Doctor's Office, 85 Front St. (tel. 360/378-8865), just across the street from the ferry landing. For the most unusual coffee and tea, try the lavender-flavored beverages at Pelindaba Downtown, in Friday Harbor Center on First Street between Spring and East streets (tel. 360/378-4248; www.pelindaba.com), in the Friday Harbor Center. And try a lavender scone with your lavender latte or tea. When it's time for beer, heft a pint of locally brewed ale at Front Street Ale House, 1 Front St. (tel. 360/378-2337; www.sanjuanbrewing.com).

If you're near the north end of the island at mealtime, you've got several good options at the Roche Harbor resort, marina, and historic hotel. McMillin's Dining Room (tel. 360/378-5757; www.rocheharbor.com) is the most formal option and serves the best food. For a more casual setting and a waterside deck, try the Madrona Grill (tel. 360/378-5757), which is popular with the boating crowd that ties up in the marina. For lunch or a light dinner, try the Lime Kiln Cafe (tel. 360/378-5757), on the dock at Roche Harbor. This lively little cafe serves good chowder and fish and chips. Big windows let you gaze out at the boats in the marina. If you're an early riser, you can also drop by for a hearty breakfast or some fresh cinnamon-and-sugar donuts.
