This all-inclusive retreat, a 10-minute walk from the center of San Pedro, is the modernist alter ego of the Portillo ski resort. A more holistic approach is at the center of the Purcell family philosophy here and they have utilized natural materials to create a strikingly austere modernist design that blends harmoniously with the landscape. Guest rooms are painted with soft cream and earth tones and are decorated with crushed seashells and local artesania. Some of the rooms have four-poster beds. Sheaths of glass framed with steel provide picture window views of the Licancabur volcano (request a room facing east), and each room has a delightful private bamboo patio. The cuisine, a daily set menu, is superb and many of the ingredients are grown in the hotel's 10-acre garden. In many ways the hotel feels like a luxury commune and guests are encouraged to kick off their shoes and mingle in the lounge area, bar, and library.
