Urepel Review

Urepel is near the mouth of the Urumea River, at the edge of the Old Town. Its interior isn't as elegant as those of the restaurants above, but fans of this place aren't bothered by that at all. They come for the food. The restaurant is the domain of Tero Almandoz, one of the outstanding chefs in the north of Spain. Deftly handled seafood dominates the menu and is often served with delicate sauces. The main courses are enhanced by an emphasis on perfectly prepared vegetables. Rape, dorada (gilthead sea bream), and raviolis of cigalas (crayfish) are likely to turn up on the menu. You can also order goose or duck, somewhat rare in San Sebastián. A local food critic got so carried away by the dessert cart and its presentation that she claimed, "It would take Velázquez to arrange a pastry so artfully" -- an indication of how highly regarded this place is. We prefer it in the evening instead of at midday, when many of the tables are reserved by local businesspeople and government officials.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
