Frommer's Review
A large, elegant building right on Parque Céspedes, this classic Santiago hotel is a landmark in the city. Graham Greene's character Wormold, from Our Man in Havana, stayed in the 1914 hotel, which underwent a full-scale renovation in 1995. Best known perhaps for its terrace bar with live music and roof garden with great views over the cathedral and Santiago, the Casa Granda is one of the best places to stay in the city. Its location is superb, as long as you don't mind the hustle and bustle of travelers and jineteros in the square. The hotel features large rooms with high ceilings and restrained decor. As with most state-run hotels in Cuba, double beds are at a premium here, in fact just 15 rooms come with a queen-size bed, and the rest have two twins. Rooms either have views of the park, Calle Heredia, or the interior -- the noise-sensitive should opt for the latter. If you want a view of the park, room nos. 403 through 407 are your best bets. The tile and marble bathrooms are quite nice, with good tubs. The elegant a la carte restaurant on the first floor is handsome, with good food and service, but it's not cheap.
