In addition to the restaurants listed here, you might want to try the restaurant at the Mesón de Santa Rosa on the Plaza de Armas. One local dish I can't recommend is the enchiladas queretanas. The problem is that the enchiladas typically come buried in a mountain of salty fresh cheese that completely overpowers the bland sauce. For fancy baked goods try Panadería El Globo (tel. 442/212-8883) at Corregidora Sur 41. For tamales, go to one of the three vendors that are on the same block of Arteaga street between Allende and Guerrero. They serve tamales and the corn-based beverage, atole, all day long and well into the night. Open only at night is a pretty good taco place called Tacos del 57 (tel. 442/224-2211) at Calle del 57 #21. It's 1 block west of Ezequiel Montes, right before you get to the first traffic light (there's no sign). It sells great tacos al pastor (tacos made with thinly sliced pork and served with pineapple, onion, and cilantro), but for the most part sells tacos de guisos (called tacos de cazuela in other parts of Mexico, meaning any taco made with something cooked in a sauce, such as eggs cooked in a chile pasilla sauce or pork rinds cooked in a red sauce). It also offers delicious and safe fresh-fruit drinks. Tip: It's popular to go out for a late breakfast on weekends. If you're not having breakfast at your hotel, you can beat the crowds by showing up at a restaurant by 9am.
