Parador de Santillana Gil Blas/Santillana del Mar

The best places to stay in town are either of these two paradores. Although they occupy the same address, they are two different hotels, each with 28 units. The more expensive, with better rooms, is the government-rated four-star Parador de Santillana Gil Blas, followed by the government-rated three-star Parador de Santillana del Mar. Both hotels occupy a 400-year-old former palace with modern extensions. Both are filled with antiques and have hand-hewn plank floors, chandeliers, and refectory tables. Large portraits of knights in armor hang in the main gallery. Most of the guest rooms are large, with antiques and windows on two sides, some with views of a garden. Several rooms in the three-star parador are much smaller. (These tend to be on the top floor.)
