Fast Facts -- There's a 24-hour drugstore called San Judas Tadeo, Ave. Independencia 57 (tel. 809/685-8165). The best hospital in Santo Dominco, and the one recommended by the U.S. Embassy, is Clinica Abreu, Calle Beller 42 (tel. 809/688-4411). Most of its English-speaking doctors trained in the United States, and it never closes. For the police, call tel. 911.

Visitor Information -- The Tourist Office is located at Avenida Mexico, Esquina Calle 30 de Marzo (tel. 809/221-4660; www.godominicanrepublic.com), open Monday to Friday from 8am to 3pm.
